C-USA Tennis Athletes of the Month

IRVING, Texas - Tulsa sweeps the Conference USA Tennis Athletes of the Month awards as Japie De Klerk takes the men's honor and Sam Vickers is the women's winner. De Klerk advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Men's All-American Championship as he upset three players ranked in the top 50 in the nation, earning hime a spot in the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Vickers was the runner up at the USTA/ITA Central Regional in singles play and teamed with Isaura Enrique to win the doubles action and earn a spot at the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.

WOMEN'S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE MONTH (OCT.)
SAM VICKERS, TULSA
Junior / Lincolnshire, England

Vickers was the runner up at the USTA/ITA Central Regional in singles play and teamed with Isaura Enrique to win the doubles action and earn a spot at the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships November 8-11 in Flushing, N.Y. She produced an 8-2 record for the month of October. At the USTA/ITA Central Regional, Vickers won her first five matches to advance to the finals in the singles draw before falling to the No. 14 ranked player in the nation Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State, 6-1, 7-5. Vickers teamed up with Isaura Enrqiue in doubles at the USTA/ITA Central Regional where the Tulsa tandem won the doubles draw defeating Niedermayerova and Ivana Kubicova, 8-3. Vickers began the month posting a 2-1 mark in singles play at the Razorback Classic.

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE MONTH (OCT.)
JAPIE DE KLERK, TULSA
Junior, Ashton, South Africa

De Klerk advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championship. He upset three players ranked in the top 50 in the nation en route to earning a spot in the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships November 8-11 in Flushing, N.Y. In the first round, he defeated No. 17 Bob van Overbeek of Florida, 6-4, 6-1. The second round saw a 6-4, 7-6(6) victory over No. 26 Gonzalez Austin of Vanderbilt. The Tulsa junior then went on to eliminate Texas' Soren Hess-Olesen 6-0, 6-2, who is ranked No. 42. In the quarterfinals, De Klerk went up against No. 10 KU Singh of Georgia and went three sets with the Bulldog before losing a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5) affair.
