For the second consecutive month, SMU senior Marta Lesniak and Tulsa junior Clifford Marsland have been named Conference USA Tennis Athletes of the Month. Tenth-ranked Lesniak went 9-3 in singles, 3-1 in doubles and advanced to the semifinal round in the ITA All-American Fall Regional which automatically qualifies her for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in November.
Marsland and teammate Ashley Watling won the 2011 USTA/ITA Men's Doubles Central Region Championship last month. The No. 4-ranked duo is now automatically qualified for the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 3-6. In singles play, Marsland reached the quarterfinals of the Central Region Singles Championship.

MARTA LESNIAK, SMU

No. 10 Marta Lesniak went 9-3 in singles and 3-1 in doubles for October. In singles she recorded wins over No. 4 Denise Dy of Washington and No. 9 Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia while advancing to the quarterfinal round of the ITA All-American in Los Angeles. She also advanced to the semifinal round in the ITA Fall Regional and the Baylor Invitational. By reaching the quarterfinal of the ITA All-American, she automatically qualified for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 3-6 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. In doubles, Lesniak partnered with Edyta Cieplucha to reach the semifinals of the ITA Fall Regional, kncokcing of duos from Texas A&M, Texas and Rice en route to the semis.

CLIFFORD MARSLAND, TULSA

Marsland and senior teammate Ashley Watling claimed the 2011 USTA/ITA Men's Doubles Central Region Championship in October. The No. 4-ranked duo is now automatically qualified for the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 3-6. The top seed in the tournament won the fourth Central Region Championship title for a Tulsa doubles team in school history and the first since 2006. They dropped Minnesota's No. 22-ranked tandem of Julian Dehn and Rok Bonin 8-2 in the semifinals. They claimed the title with a 9-7 triumph over No. 13-ranked Benedikt Lindheim and Christopher Aumueller of Nebraska. Marsland and Watling also reached the quarterfinals of the 2011 ITA All-American Championships in early October, taking down Georgia's No. 24-ranked team of Nathan Pasha and Hernus Pieters 8-2 in the process. In singles action, Marsland reached the quarterfinals of the Central Region Championship, where he fell to eventual runner-up Anis Ghorbel of Drake. Marsland competed in the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships, and he posted a 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 upset victory over No. 38 Brennan Boyajian of North Carolina in the consolation draw. Two of Marsland's three singles losses in October came against highly-ranked opponents in No. 19 Finn Tearney of Pepperdine and No. 49 Chris Mengel of Duke.
