April 23, 2012
ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Tulsa won its second-straight and seventh overall Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory over No. 2 seed Memphis at the UCF Tennis Complex in Orlando, Fla.
The top seed and No. 23 Golden Hurricane earned the league's automatic bid to the upcoming 2012 NCAA Championship. On a windy morning, Tulsa extended its winning streak to eight-straight matches and winners of 12 of its last 13.
"This has been a very tough tournament," Tulsa head coach Vince Westbrook said. "This is probably the toughest Conference USA tournament that we have played in since we have been in this conference. This is our seventh final, and from the very beginning, it has been tough. The conditions have been tough down here. We just beat a great Memphis team that is top 30 in the country. We are pretty happy with the results."
The Golden Hurricane, who improved to 18-8 with the victory, started the day by taking the doubles point, and then recorded three singles triumphs to clinch the win. Grant Ive secured the win for Tulsa with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Connor Glennon at No. 4.
Facing the Tigers' (19-5) David O'Leary at No. 5, Tulsa's Tristan Jackson posted a quick 6-2, 6-4 win. At the No. 2 position, the Golden Hurricane earned their third point of the day when Clifford Marsland topped Johnny Grimal, 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles action, Tulsa won at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Japie De Klerk and Alejandro Espejo handled Leon Nasemann and Grimal, 8-4, at No. 3. Marsland joined Ashley Watling for a win at the top spot. The Tulsa duo, ranked ninth nationally, defeated David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury, 9-7.
