HOUSTON, Texas - The Tulane men's tennis team returned to the court for the first time as the program opened day one of the 2009 Rice Fall Invitational Friday. Shaye Wali and Etham Frenkel both posted wins for the Green Wave.
Tulane, restarting the program after a four-year hiatus, saw sophomore Shaye Wali take a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-6) decision over LSU's Mark Bowtell in Singles Flight A.
Frankel defeated Prairie View A&M's Cudakwashe Nyatoti, 6-3, 6-4 in singles flight D
In flight B, freshman Joe Young was outlasted by Stefan Szacinski of LSU, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) while freshman Adam Bernstein fell to Darren Walsh of SMU in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Freshman Coby Kramer-Golinkoff fell to Rice's Christian Saravia, 7-5, 6-7, 1-0 (10-2) in flight C.
In doubles action, the tandem of Wali and freshman Rod Rappaccioli fell to Isamu Tachibana and Oscar Podlewski of Rice, 8-6. Also in Flight A, SMU's Walsh and Adham El-Effindi downed the duo of Young and Bernstein, 8-4.
In doubles flight B, Kramer-Golinkoff and Frenkel lost to a split duo of Rice's Andy Wang and LSU's Roger Anderson, 8-3.
The Rice Invitational continues Saturday and Sunday.
