Watling, Marsland Fall To No. 2 Team From USC

May 24, 2012

ATHENS, Ga. - Senior Ashley Watling and junior Clifford Marsland lost to the No. 2-ranked tandem of Steve Johnson and Roberto Quiroz Thursday night in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Doubles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The No. 11-ranked duo from Tulsa lost 6-3, 6-3 to the top doubles team from the Trojans, who recently won their fourth-straight team national championship.

Johnson and Quiroz are now 19-0 this season, and Johnson is currently on a 68-match win streak in singles.

Watling and Marsland fell behind by a break in the first set, and they were unable to break back.

The Tulsa tandem finally got a service break and held a 3-1 lead in the second set, but USC broke back right away and won the last five games to take the match.

Watling and Marsland tied the school record earlier this season when they became the No. 3-ranked team in the nation, and they end the year with a 29-9 record.

Watling leaves Tulsa as arguably the greatest doubles player in school history. He finishes his storied career with a 98-43 doubles mark. The TU duo also won the 2011 ITA Central Region Doubles Championship, and they reached the finals of the 2011 USTA/ITA National Doubles Championship.
