Feb. 3, 2013
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team battled No. 21 Auburn close in doubles and on three singles courts, but the Tigers claimed most of the key points here Sunday en route to a 6-1 victory over the Blazers at the George Ward Tennis Center.
UAB (2-3) gained the early momentum with its win at No. 2 doubles as Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar took an 8-4 win over Dennis Lengsfeld and Lucas Lopasso. The loss was only the second the Tigers have suffered at any of the three doubles positions through the season's first six matches and the first of the 2012-13 season for Lengsfeld and Lopasso.
Auburn's Daniel Cochrane and Andreas Mies, the nation's No. 2-ranked doubles tandem, downed the Blazers' Tom Puetz and David Zimmerman at the No. 1 spot, 8-4, leaving the match at No. 3 to determine the doubles point.
Van Dooren made it 2-0 Auburn (5-1) with his 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Dirube. Mies made it a 3-0 Tiger advantage with his 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 over Zimmerman. Michael Wordell sealed the victory for Auburn with his 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Pinto.
While the Tigers won in straight sets at three singles positions to seal the win, the remaining three matches all were extended with tight matches.
Lukas Ollert came back to edge past UAB's Puetz, 1-6, 7-6 (6), 10-8 at No. 3 while Cochrane captured a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over the Blazers Rondino, a transfer from Auburn. Cochrane registered a service break in the 12th game in the first set and went on to outlast his former teammate in the second.
UAB got on the board with Helliar's win at No. 4 singles as he handed Lopasso his first loss of the season. Helliar rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over the Auburn senior.
The Blazers will face their third consecutive ranked opponent Wednesday when they travel to Tuscaloosa to take on No. 52 Alabama before facing No. 42 Middle Tennessee on the road on Friday, Feb. 8.
