BIRMINGHAM, Ala - South Carolina sophomore Jeff Scannella scored the golden goal for the Gamecocks just 20 seconds into the first overtime and USC advances to the semifinal Friday against the winner of tonight's Tulsa/UAB match. Scannella scored off a penalty kick for his seventh goal of the season. The two teams played more than 75 minutes tied at 1-1. Both goals were scored in the first half, less than a minute apart. Tiger senior F Kevin Walsh scored first in the 13th minute and then freshman Mike Lindsay tied it up for the Gamecocks in the 14th minute. Scannella also assisted on Lindsay's goal. Walsh scored on a breakaway past the Carolina keeper into the lower right corner. Memphis senior goalkeeper Tyler Strom made six saves on the evening.
