IRVING, Texas – The 2012 Conference USA Men’s Soccer Championship kicks off Wednesday at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala. The opening round features No. 4 seed Memphis against No. 5 Kentucky, followed by No. 3 UCF against No. 6 UAB. Top seed SMU and No. 2 seed Tulsa earned byes into Friday’s semifinal round. Both opening round and semifinal matches will be shown live on the C-USA Digital Network. Sunday’s final will air nationally on CBS Sports Network.

SMU is the defending tournament champion and the top seed at the Championship for the fourth time. The Mustangs have won the C-USA tournament twice since joining the league in 2005 and once at the top seed. Second seed Tulsa is a three-time tournament champion, winning three consecutive times from 2007-08.
Memphis and UAB have each won the event once. Kentucky and UCF are in search of their first C-USA tournament title.
The latest NCAA RPI report slots eight C-USA teams among the top 71 in the country, making it one of the strongest top-to-bottom leagues in the country. Only Conference USA and the Big East have as many as eight teams in the top 71.
Four Conference USA teams rank among the nation’s top 30 in the most recent NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) report (11/5). Just three leagues boast as many as four teams among the nation’s top 30: Conference USA, the Big East and the ACC.

According to the most recent Massey Ratings (11/4), five C-USA teams have played top-25 strength of schedules – one more than the Big East, the same number as the Pac 12 and one fewer than the ACC.

Hobbs Named Senior CLASS Candidate Finalist
FIU senior defender Anthony Hobbs has been named as one of 10 men’s soccer finalists for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award.
Online voting will take place until Nov. 19 at the Senior CLASS Award website.
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 men’s candidates and 30 women’s candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting is underway to help select the winner. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.
