IRVING, Texas – No. 25 SMU pushed its winning streak to four matches and its unbeaten streak to nine matches with a 2-0 win against Kentucky. The Mustangs maintained their perfect Conference USA record, improving to 4-0. UAB leveled its C-USA mark at 1-1 with a 2-1 win at FIU. Marshall shutout Evansville in non-conference action to push its record to 9-1-1 for the season.
Saturday, October 6

No. 25 SMU defeated Kentucky, 2-0, Saturday night at Westcott Field. Sophomore Tyler Engel and junior Juan Castillo scored for the Mustangs. With the win, SMU moves to 8-2-2 on the year and holds a 4-0 mark in Conference USA action.
Engel opened the scoring for the Mustangs with a penalty kick in the 65th minute after Castillo was taken down in the box. Engel converted the opportunity for his fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 SMU lead. The forward leads the Mustangs in goals (5), game-winning goals (4), assists (5) and points (15).
Castillo added insurance with a goal of his own in the 75th minute. Engel sent a long through pass from the right side to Castillo, who ran onto the ball and tapped it in from eight yards out. Senior Mladen Lemez and junior Chase Wickham each found the back of the net to lead UAB to a 2-1 C-USA road win at FIU. The Blazers, who are receiving votes to be ranked in the latest top-25 polls, earned their first league win to improve to 6-3-2 (1-1 C-USA) on the year, including a 4-1-1 record in their last six matches.
UAB struck first just under 10 minutes into the game when Wickham ripped a shot from the left side of the field which beat FIU goalkeeper Robin Spiegel into the far side to give his team a 1-0 lead at the 9:36 mark. The goal was assisted by senior Kofi Gyawu, who now leads the team in assists (3) to go along with goals (4) and points (11).

Marshall 2, at Evansville 0
Marshall defeated Evansville 2-0 courtesy of goals by senior Tom Jackson and freshman Andrew Ferguson. The win moves the Herd to 9-1-1, surpassing last season’s win total and making the Herd undefeated in non-conference play for the 2012 season. Senior goalkeeper Daniel Withrow now holds the Marshall single-season shutout record on his own with 8.5 this year, surpassing Taly Goode’s 7.5 mark, which he had tied last game.
