IRVING, Texas – Tulsa opened up Conference USA men’s soccer play with an impressive 4-0 win against South Carolina and has swept this week’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors. Freshman forward Cristian Mata scored the game-winner and added an assist for an offense that has netted 11 goals in its last two matches. Senior goalkeeper Mark Pais kept his third clean sheet of the season and earned his fifth victory of the year.

C-USA Offensive Player of the Week – Cristian Mata, Tulsa, Fr., F, Tulsa, Okla.

Mata had four shots, three of which were on goal, the game-winning goal and an assist to lead Tulsa to a 4-0 win over South Carolina in the league opener.  Mata’s goal was shot from 10 yards out and was chipped over the keeper’s head in the 24th minute.  He now has a team-best six goals, one assist and a team-leading 13 points on the season. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Mata.

C-USA Defensive Player of the Week - Mark Pais, Tulsa, Sr., GK, St. Louis, Mo.

Pais directed a defensive effort that stifled the South Carolina attack, yielding nine shots and just four on goal in the C-USA opener. He logged all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves to earn the shutout. Pais has logged 717:13 in goal, picked up 25 saves and recorded three shutouts this season. The award is the first C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor for Pais.
