Sept. 3 Men's Soccer Players of the Week

IRVING, Texas – UAB junior striker Diego Navarrete has been named the first C-USA Offensive Player of the Week for the 2013 season after scoring three goals and adding an assist in wins against then-No. 24 VCU and High Point at the VCU Nike Classic. Charlotte senior goalkeeper Klay Davis is the Defensive Player of the Week after posting the 21st shutout of his career in the 49ers’ road victory against Denver.

C-USA Offensive Player of the Week – Diego Navarrete, UAB, Jr., F, Santiago, Chile
Navarrete recorded three goals and one assist at the VCU Nike Classic this past weekend. On Friday night, the Santiago, Chile, native matched his career-best with two goals in the Blazers 4-0 victory against No. 24 VCU. Navarrete followed that performance with a goal and assist in the squad’s 5-1 win versus High Point Sunday afternoon. His seven points led the league and his three goals during the opening week tied teammate Freddy Ruiz for the top mark in C-USA. This is the second Offensive Player of the Week honor in Navarrete’s career (Sept. 12, 2011).

C-USA Defensive Player of the Week – Klay Davis, Charlotte, Sr., GK, Jacksonville, N.C.
Davis directed a defensive effort that allowed just two shots on goal and recorded two saves en route to recording his first shutout of the season in the 49ers 2-0 win at Denver, Friday, August 30. The win was the third straight season-opening victory for Charlotte. Davis has now recorded 21 career shutouts. The award is the first C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor for Davis.
