Three weeks after its last competition, Rice University's golf team returns to the links Monday when the Owls begin play at the Fifth Annual Memphis Intercollegiate.
The Owls make a return appearance to the tournament after posting a Top 10 finish last season. The tournament will be played at Colonial Country Club South Course (par 72, 7,259 yards) in Cordova, Tenn. Colonial Country Club served as the host of the PGA Danny Thomas-St. Jude Classic from its inception until 1988.
Rice junior Michael Buttacavoli was the Owls' top qualifier this week for the tournament. Through two tournaments this season, he leads the team with a 74.50 stroke average and has one, Top 20 finish this fall. Senior Erik Petersen missed the 2008 spring season with an injury and will be making his season debut at the Memphis Intercollegiate.
Rounding out the Owls' five-player team is Christopher Brown, Robert Burrow and Michael Whitehead.
Rice will be paired with the University of Maryland and Memphis individuals for the first day. The 16-team field is heavy with Mid-South teams including Arkansas State, Ole Miss and Mississippi State and also includes Big 10 schools Ohio State and Wisconsin.
The tournament is slated for 36 holes on Monday with the final 18 slated for Tuesday.
