IRVING, Texas - SMU freshman Alex Rossi won the first tournament of her collegiate career at the Chip-N-Club Invite in Lincoln, Neb., and has been named C-USA Women's Golfer of the Week. Marshall senior Nathan Kerns is the Men's Golfer of the Week after he fired an eight-under and finished in second place at the season-opening Marshall Invitational.
C-USA Men's Golfer of the Week - Nathan Kerns, Marshall, Sr., Ironton, Ohio
Kerns captured a second place finish at the 43rd annual Marshall Invitational. Kerns' 54-hole performance led the Thundering Herd to a tie for second with the two-time defending event champions Ohio State. The runner-up finish is the first for Marshall in its own tournament since 1983. The Ironton, Ohio, native fell one stroke short of eventual individual champion Korey Ward of Xavier. Kerns was one of three golfers (out of 88 total participants) to record a score of under-par in all three rounds. This is his second C-USA Golfer of the Week award.
C-USA Women's Golfer of the Week - Alex Rossi, SMU, Fr., Austin, Texas
Rossi won the first tournament of her career at the Chip-N Club Invite in Lincoln, Neb. Rossi held the lead after round one, but fell behind in round two. She came back strong in round three, however, and shot a 4-under 68 to take the win by two shots. Rossi nailed a 40-foot downhill birdie putt on the 17th hole to clinch the victory and led SMU to its second consecutive team title at the event. This is the first Golfer of the Week honor for Rossi.
