May 8, 2012

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB men's golfer Hunter Hawkins shot a two-under par 70 and advanced in a local qualifier for the 2012 U.S. Open. The tournament was held at the Hoover Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.

The event in Hoover was one of many qualifying tournaments held at various locations across the country.

Hawkins, a redshirt junior on this year's NCAA Regional squad, was one of two golfers to survive a five-man playoff to end the day.

The Fort Payne, Ala. native will be joined by Jeff Curl (65), Will Golden (67), Richard Douglas (69) and Chip Deason (70) as the five who advance to the sectional qualifier out of the 78-man field.

Each of the five golfers will have the goal of qualifying for the U.S. Open, to be played June 14-17 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.

Hawkins will be among the five Blazers who will compete at the 2012 NCAA Regional, hosted by Stanford, which will take place May 17-19 in Stanford, Calif.
