Paul Dunne Tabbed To C-USA All-Freshman Team
May 1, 2012
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB freshman Paul Dunne was voted to the Conference USA All-Freshman team, as selected by the golf coaches from around the league. Dunne is the first Blazer golfer to earn the recognition since Blake West was named an all-freshman team honoree in 2006-07. "I am proud of the way Paul has played all season long," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "He came here and was an impact golfer from the start. I think he is deserving of this honor and he has great things in store for him during his college golfing career." Dunne burst onto the scene during his freshman season at UAB, competing in 10 of the team's 11 tournaments on the year. He finished the campaign with a per-round stroke average of 73.8 and has recorded two top-10 and six top-25 finishes during the season. His best showing came at the Hummingbird Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1) when he recorded a second-place finish in the 17-team field. During that event, he carded career-best 18-hole (66) and 36-hole (137) scores. His 137 during the event tied for the eighth-lowest 36-hole score in program history, while his five-under par 66 matched the 15th-lowest round in UAB lore. Dunne was joined on the league's all-freshman team by UTEP's Martin Simonsen, who was named the 2012 C-USA Freshman of the Year, along with Roman Robledo of Houston, SMU's Sam Fidone and Matt Mabrey of Tulsa. East Carolina senior Harold Varner was named the 2012 C-USA Golfer of the Year, UCF sophomore Ricardo Gouveia was chosen the Newcomer of the Year and Memphis' Grant Robbins was named the Coach of the Year. 2012 C-USA MEN'S GOLF AWARDS
