Memphis Takes Early Lead at C-USA Men's Golf Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. - With a pair of Tigers carding two of the top performances of the day, Memphis took an early two-stroke lead over second-place SMU on day one of the 2012 C-USA Men's Golf Championship. A total of 55 golfers played 18 holes in Sunday's opening round at the par 72, 6,935-yard Texarkana Country Club.

Seniors Jack Belote and reigning C-USA medalist Jonathan Fly finished the day four-under and three-under, respectively. Belote had five birdies during the morning and only bogeyed one hole. Fly carded a 69, moving up the leaderboard after an eagle on seven as he finished the day.

Memphis head coach Grant Robbins said, "The guys played really well today and really finished strong, going seven-under on the last three holes."

SMU senior Max Buckley is tied atop the leaderboard with a 68 to pace the Mustangs. Teammates Harry Higgs, Marc Sambol and Matt Schovee finished even par to tie for 10th place individually.

Memphis and SMU will tee off Monday's second round at 8:50 a.m. with third-place Marshall. The Thundering Herd posted a two-under 286 as sophomore Brian Anania and junior Nathan Kerns tied for eighth as each scored a 71. Redshirt freshman Tas Sipowski also provided one of the day's highlights as he sank a hole in one at No. 11 and finished even par for the day.

Houston sophomore Curtis Reed, a member of the 2011 C-USA All-Tournament Team, enters Day two tied for third with a 69. As a team, the Cougars tied for fifth with UAB as both registered a 292. That pair will team with fourth-place UCF (290) in Monday's action, teeing off at 8 a.m. on the first hole. The Knights had their top performance with their own reigning all-tournament team member Greg Eason, with is tied for fifth place. Eason and Buckley both tallied six birdies on the day.

Tulsa and Rice will be paired together for round two at 8 a.m. on No. 10. East Carolina, Southern Miss, and UTEP will be matched following with tee times starting at 8:50 a.m.

Tuesday's final round also tees off at 8 a.m. The winner of the C-USA Championship receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. Live scoring is available here.
