IRVING, Texas – East Carolina freshman Katie Kirk placed fourth to lead the Pirates to the tournament title at the UNCW Seahawk Classic and has been named C-USA Women’s Golfer of the Week. Matt Mabrey of Tulsa was the league’s top men’s finisher last week and is this week’s Men’s Golfer of the Week.
C-USA Women’s Golfer of the Week - Katie Kirk, East Carolina, Fr., Davidson, N.C.
Kirk guided the Pirates (93-34) to a first place finish at the 2012 UNCW Seahawk Classic. For the Pirates it was their second tournament crown of the season (Golfweek Program in September) and their sixth top-five finish of the year. In her ninth event of the season, the Davidson, N.C. native carded her personal best 1-under par 215 (72-72-71), finishing three shots out of medalist honors to finish in fourth out of 62 participants. The fourth-place finish, also a career-best, marked her fourth top-15 placement of the season and fifth top-25 finish. During the two-day event, she registered nine birdies (t-4th in the field), 38 pars (t-10th) and posted even round 4.00 on par-4 and 2-under par on par-5 holes, both ranking among the tournament leaders. This is Kirk’s first Golfer of the Week honor.
C-USA Men’s Golfer of the Week - Matt Mabrey, Tulsa, Fr., Little Rock, Ark.
In a field of 94 golfers at the Desert Shootout at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz., Tulsa true freshman Matt Mabrey finished in 17th place. Mabrey carded rounds of 72-69-73 for a two-under par score of 214. The Golden Hurricane finished in sixth place as a team, just eight strokes out of third place. This is the first Golfer of the Week award for Mabrey.
