IRVING - Rice senior Michael Whitehead has earned Conference USA Golfer of the Week accolades after helping the Owls to a tie for fifth at the 11th Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon. Whitehead also tied for fifth individually with his five-under par 211 tournament total.
Whitehead birdied his first hole and was four-under par through his first nine holes en route to a final-round 68 on Tuesday. His final-round performance propelled him to a tie for fifth after he finished the first 36 holes tied for 11th.
Despite opening tournament play with a 73, the Sugar Land native came back later in the first day of the tournament to card a 70 to move into contention. For the second time during his senior year, Whitehead improved his scoring with each round of the tournament (73-70-68). He lowered his season scoring average to 71.38 strokes per round and earned his fourth, top-five finish of the season.
Whitehead has led the Owls in all seven of the team's tournaments this season. He earned his third Golfer of the Week honor of his senior campaign and fourth of his career.
Rice returns to action in two weeks when it travels to the Louisiana Tech Bulldog Classic.
