Tulsa Men Finish in Sixth Place at the Rees Jones Invitational

Daufuskie Island, South Carolina - The Tulsa men's golf team took home sixth place at the inaugural Rees Jones Invitational in Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. The Golden Hurricane fired their lowest round of the tournament in the final round, a 14-over par 302. Tulsa's score of 302 was the second best team score in the final day of play.

Tulsa finished three strokes behind fifth-place Eastern Michigan and six strokes behind fourth place finisher No. 29 Michigan State. Walking away with the tournament title was South Carolina. The Gamecocks were followed by Georgia State and San Diego State to round out the top three.

Individually the Golden Hurricane was led by a pair of seniors, Nicolas Geyger and Rob Laird tied for 15th place with final scores of 227. One stroke behind them in a tie for 18th place was fellow senior Ryan Brooks.

Geyger entered the final round tied for fourth place, but he couldn't match the magic he had in the first two rounds. He would go on to shoot his highest score of the tournament a 10 over par 82.

Laird and Brooks were each able to improve their position in the final standings. Laird carded four birdies in his final round and finished with a score of 78 to jump three spots in the final standings to 15th place. Meanwhile, Brooks leaped 11 spots after recording two birdies with his final round score of 75.

Not to be outdone, the TU freshmen also got into the action of improving their places in the final standings.

Stephen Carney shot his best round of the tournament by eight strokes in Tuesday's final round. Carney had three birdies on his way to a final round 73. His score today elevated him 14 spots to finish the tournament tied for 33rd place with a 54-hole total score of 235.

 

 

Also saving his best for last was freshman Andre` Tourinho who shot a final round 77. Tourinho carded four birdies to break 80 for the first time in the tournament. His final round 77 helped him move up eight spots today to finish in 40th place.

The Rees Jones Invitational concludes the fall campaign for the men's golf team. The Hurricane men will return to action February 2-3, 2009 at the Arizona National in Tucson, Arizona.
