GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The UAB men's golf team opened the spring season with an 11th-place result at the 2010 SunTrust Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla. The final round was delayed due to frost as the Blazers and the 14-team field battled tough conditions both days.

The Green and Gold entered the day just four strokes back of fourth place, but finished Sunday's round with a 299 to slip three spots and close the 54-hole event with a team score of 890 (297-294-299).

Leading the way for UAB was senior Blake West, who carded a team-low round of 70 on Sunday to vault to 18th place overall with a three-round total of seven-over par 217 (76-71-70). West's three-round total was the second-best mark in his career, while the final round of 70 was also his second-highest 18-hole score.

Senior John Darby, who entered the day tied for the overall lead, struggled on the par-70, 6,701-yard course on the final round. After shooting rounds of 70 and 71 through the opening 36 holes, the Birmingham, Ala. native carded a 79 during Sunday's final round to close the event with a 10-over par 220 to finish tied for 29th.

Senior Adam West played the most consistent golf of any Blazer throughout the weekend, carding rounds of 73-74-74 to finish tied for 31st with a 221. Senior Cathal O'Malley tied for 67th overall with a 233 (78-79-76), while sophomore Blake Watts rounded out UAB with a 243.

Fourth-ranked Florida, the tournament host, won its seventh-straight invitational title with a total team tournament score of one-over par 841. The Gators cruised to the championship title, beating second place No. 16 Florida State (859) by 18 strokes. Chattanooga, ranked No. 40th, finished third overall with an 869, while Lamar finished fourth overall with an 870. Duke, ranked 26th overall, and No. 34 LSU rounded out the top five with both teams carding an 872.

 

 

The Blazers will next be in action on Feb. 28 when it competes at the John Hayt Intercollegiate in Ponte Verda, Fla.
