Conference USA Football All-Conference Teams
Dec. 10, 2013
Conference USA announced its 2013 All-Conference football teams today, as selected by the league's 14 head football coaches. All 14 schools were represented with at least one selection and 10 placed at least one player on the first team. C-USA champion Rice produced the most total selections with 10, while East Division champion Marshall had nine. Rice and North Texas each had the most first team choices with five, followed by Marshall and Tulane with four.
Rice's 10 selections include five on each side of the ball. Highlighting the first team choices are senior RB Charles Ross (league's leader in rushing yards per game at 113.8 and rushing touchdowns with 14), sophomore DL Christian Covington (51 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks) and senior DB Phillip Gaines (four interceptions and 11 passes defended). Senior C Nate Richards and senior LS Trevor Gillette also were listed on the first team.
Marshall produced three first team offensive selections and one choice on defense. Senior TE Gator Hoskins, who leads the nation's tight end in touchdowns with 13, is joined by junior WR Tommy Shuler (97 catches for 1,097 yards and nine touchdowns) and senior C Chris Jasperse on the first team.
North Texas had one first-team honoree on offense, two on defense and two on special teams. Junior G Cyril Lemon is joined by senior LB Zach Orr (114 tackles, three forced fumbles, four fumbles recovered), senior FS Marcus Trice (83 tackles, 13 passes defended) and senior Brelan Chancellor, who earned first team recognition as a punt returner (league-high 16.8 average, one return for a TD) and kick returner (league-best 28.1 yard average, one return for a TD). Chancellor is just the second player in league history to be named first team at both return positions (UCF's Joe Burnett in 2008).
All four of Tulane's all-conference members were first-team selections. Senior K Cairo Santos (16 field goals and a perfect 35-for-35 on extra-point attempts) repeated as a first team performer. Also named were senior WR Ryan Grant (926 yards, nine touchdowns), senior DL Julius Warmsley (second in C-USA with 15.5 tackles for loss) and sophomore DB Lorenzo Doss (tied for league-high with seven interceptions and second with 16 passes defended).
East Carolina had three first-team selections, all on offense. Junior QB Shane Carden accounted for 42 touchdowns this season (32 passing and 10 rushing) while throwing for a Conference USA-best 3,866 yards. Joining him is senior G Will Simmons and junior WR Justin Hardy (league-highs in catches with 1053 and yards with 1,218, to go along with eight touchdown receptions).
Tulsa had two offensive picks and one defensive selection on the first team. Senior RB Trey Watts, who has run for a league-best 1,329 yards and 11 touchdowns, is joined by senior OT Stetson Burnett and senior LB Shawn Jackson (second in C-USA with 123 total tackles, first with 17.5 tackles for loss).
Florida Atlantic had two first-team honorees, while Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee and UAB had one apiece. The Owls are represented by senior DL Cory Henry (league-high 7.5 sacks) and junior CB D'Joun Smith (C-USA-best seven interceptions and 20 passes defended). The Bulldogs placed senior IK Enemkpali (5.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss), the Blue Raiders produced sophomore LB T.T. Barber (112 tackles, 10.5 TFLs) and the Blazers listed junior P Hunter Mullins (league-high 43.1 average).
The league's individual awards will be released Wednesday, December 11. Conference USA will conclude the 2013 season by sending six teams to bowl games.
