2012 C-USA Football All-Conference Teams

Conference USA announced its 2012 All-Conference football teams today, as selected by the league's 12 head football coaches. All 12 schools were represented with at least one selection and 10 placed at least one player on the first team. C-USA champion Tulsa produced the most total selections with 10, while East Division champion UCF had the most first team choices with six, followed by the Golden Hurricane with five. The Knights ranked second in total selections with nine, while SMU had seven and East Carolina and Houston each produced six. Tulsa's 10 selections include five on each side of the ball. Highlighting the first team choices are senior LB DeAundre Brown (125 tackles, 17 TFL's, 9.0 sacks), senior DE Cory Dorris (49 tackles, 6.0 sacks, two blocked kicks) and senior DB Dexter McCoil (85 tackles, four interceptions). Brian DeShane and Jared Grigg, a pair of offensive linemen who are part of a unit that allowed the fewest sacks (nine) in C-USA, also were listed on the first team. UCF had two first team picks apiece on offense, defense and special teams. Senior RB Latavius Murray (league-best 103.5 yards per game and 14 rushing touchdowns) is joined by senior OL Jordan Rae to represent the offense, while senior FS Kemal Ishmael (team-best 116 tackles, three interceptions) and senior DE Troy Davis (6.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries) are listed on defense. The Knights produced the first team kick returner and punt returner, respectively, in senior Quincy McDuffie (34.2 avg., three touchdown returns) and sophomore J.J. Worton (league-high 24 returns for 264 yards, an 11.0 yard average). Houston produced four first team selections. Two of the Cougars' honorees were on defense in senior LB Phillip Steward (128 tackles, 19 TFLs, 11 sacks) and senior CB D.J. Hayden (12 pass breakups, four interceptions, two INT returns for TDs in nine games before suffering a season-ending injury). Senior OL Jacolby Ashworth and junior P Richie Leone (league-high 45.5 yard average) were also first team choices. SMU and Tulane both placed three players on the first team unit. Mustangs senior RB Zach Line earned a place after leading the league in rushing for the third straight season (1,207 yards) and scoring 12 touchdowns, while senior DE Margus Hunt (8.5 TFLs, 6.0 sacks, three blocked kicks) and senior LB Ja'Gared Davis (71 tackles, nine TFLs, three forced fumbles) were listed on the defensive first squad. Green Wave junior K Cairo Santos (21-of-21 on field goal attempts) is a finalist for the Lou Groza Award and is joined by junior WR Ryan Grant (league-best seven 100-yard receiving games, league-high 1,149 yards) and senior LS Billy Johnson. Marshall, Rice and UAB each had a pair of first team choices. The Thundering Herd is represented by sophomore QB Rakeem Cato (leads the FBS in completions (406) and passing yards (4,201), is tied for second in touchdown passes (37) and is fifth in total offense (4,232) and sophomore WR Tommy Shuler (110 receptions for 1,138 yards and six touchdowns). The Owls list junior DB Phillip Gaines (FBS-leading 18 pass breakups) and senior TE Vance McDonald (35 catches for 433 yards in just nine games). The Blazers feature sophomore RB Darrin Reaves (1,037 yards, 13 TDs) and senior OL Chris Hubbard. East Carolina sophomore WR Justin Hardy (83 receptions, 1,046 yards, 10 TDs) and Southern Miss senior DL Jamie Collins (league-best 20 tackles for loss, 10 sacks) round out the first team selections. The league's individual awards will be released Wednesday, December 5. Conference USA will conclude the 2012 season by sending five teams to bowl games.
