November 19 Football Players of the Week
Nov. 19, 2012
Following his career-high three touchdown game in a showdown win over UCF, Tulsa sophomore WR Keyarris Garrett has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week. The Defensive Player of the Week went to Tulsa senior LB DeAundre Brown, who had nine tackles, a sack and three pass breakups in the Golden Hurricane's West Division-clinching win. Special teams recognition was given to Rice junior K Chris Boswell, who broke a school record with five field goals and tied the NCAA record with three kicks of 50 yards or longer in the Owls' win over SMU. C-USA Football Players of the Week are voted on by a panel of the league's media.
In a 23-21 victory against UCF, it was Garrett's three touchdown receptions that led Tulsa to clinching the West Division title for the fourth time in eight seasons. He posted a career-high 130 yards on seven receptions for a career-best three receiving touchdowns. Garrett's first TD was a 70-yard reception where he took a pass and ran the final 40 yards for Tulsa's first score of the game. His second touchdown went 20 yards to give Tulsa a 16-14 lead. Garrett's final touchdown grab went 13 yards on 3rd-and-13 to increase Tulsa's lead to 23-14 in the third quarter.
Brown wins for the second time this season after leading a solid defensive effort that held UCF to 66 yards rushing (123 yards below its season average), 182 yards below its total offense average of 417 ypg and just 85 total yards in the second-half. He had nine total tackles, including eight solos and had 2.5 tackles for losses totaling 11 yards. Brown added one sack for minus 9 yards on a 3rd-and-10 situation and also had a team-high three of Tulsa's eight pass break-ups in the win.
Boswell tied an NCAA record by kicking three field goals of 50 yards or longer, while breaking the school record with five field goals overall in Rice's 36-14 win over SMU. Boswell converted from 56, 53 and 51 yards to become the sixth kicker in NCAA history to convert three from 50 or more in a game. His 56 yarder was his second this year from 55 or more, becoming the first player in C-USA history to have to kicks of that distance in the same season (UTEP's Jose Martinez had a 64 yarder in 2008 and a 57 yarder in 2007). Boswell leads the nation with five field goals of 50 or more this year and 10 in his career. His 18 point afternoon allowed him to break the school single season record for kick scoring. Boswell now has 96 points, five more than Clark Fangmeier in 2008. His kickoffs held SMU to an average field position of their own 22, thanks to five touchbacks, two returns stopped at the 13 and one at the 15. This was Boswell's second weekly honor this season.
