East Carolina takes offensive shootout at UAB, 54-42

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Dominique Davis threw for 331 yards and five touchdowns to give East Carolina a 54-42 win over UAB on Thursday night. The Pirates (6-4, 5-1 Conference USA) became bowl eligible by scoring 20 consecutive points. They trailed 42-34 with less than nine minutes to play, but a 56-yard punt return and a fumbled kickoff by UAB helped them close the gap quickly.
An 11-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Michael Bowman made it 42-40 after the tying 2-point attempt failed.
After the Blazers went three-and-out, Harris return a punt to the UAB 11. Two plays later Davis hit Jon Williams with an 11-yard touchdown pass. Davis ran for the conversion, giving ECU a 48-42 lead with 5:48 remaining.
Jonathan Williams had five catches for 115 yards and 14 carries for 82 yards and another score for East Carolina.
Bryan Ellis threw for 418 yards and five touchdowns for the Blazers (3-7, 2-4).
The teams put up 1,041 yards of total offense.
The Pirates' final score of the first half was set up by a 77-yard pass from Davis to Jon Williams, who was running wide open along the left sideline after UAB was late taking the field following a timeout. That led to a 9-yard touchdown run by Williams with 40 seconds left in the half.
