HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Chilly temperatures remained through the Hattiesburg area on Wednesday as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles prepared for Saturday's Conference USA showdown with SMU under the lights of the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
The team spent two hours installing their game plan for the Mustangs, who they will play for the fourth time in the series which dates back to 2007.
Under coach June Jones, SMU employs a unique run-and-shoot offense with a multiple defense that Southern Miss will have to be fully prepared for.
"They are more four-wide, one-back (in their base offense)," said Johnson. "They still have a very good running game out of it and have an excellent defense that will give you a lot of different looks."
Johnson was pleased with the execution of all phases of his team on Wednesday, including the passing game.
"Practice has gotten faster, more intense, and the execution was much better today," the first-year head coach added. "We threw and caught the ball a lot better day. (The players) are hanging in there. Their spirits are up and we're practicing well."
Saturday's game is set for a 6 p.m. kickoff and will be broadcast on FSN with Joel Meyers, Dave Lapham and Desmond Purnell calling the action. It can also be heard on the IMG Sports Network with John Cox and Vic Purvis.
