Sept. 5 Football Players of the Week
Sept. 5, 2006
UTEP's Quintin Demps had a pair of second half interceptions to secure UTEP's victory at San Diego State and earn Defensive Player of the Week honors. Houston's Kevin Kolb led a fourth quarter comeback on offense and Cougar Marquay Love had a huge special teams play as the UH teammates were named Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively.
Kevin Kolb QB Houston
With the Cougars trailing by 16 points late in the third quarter, senior quarterback Kevin Kolb rallied Houston past Rice, 31-30, in the annual Bayou Bucket game. Kolb completed 22-of-35 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns. In the fourth quarter Kolb engineered two touchdown drives to take the lead from the Owls, connecting with Vincent Marshall and Anthony Alridge on a pair of eight-yard TD passes
Quintin Demps DB UTEP
Demps recorded two interceptions for 37 yards in UTEP's win at San Diego State. His second pick -- good for 24 yards -- came midway through the fourth quarter after SDSU cut a 24-point deficit down to three points, and set up UTEP's game-clinching final touchdown drive. UTEP scored touchdowns off both of Demps' interceptions. He also had six tackles (five solos) in the game.
Marquay Love DT Houston
Love added to his Houston career lead in blocked kicks, as the senior rejected Rice's fourth PAT attempt and provided the margin of victory for the Cougars in their come-from-behind win. Love now has a UH-best six blocked kicks in his career.
