BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB football team practiced in shorts and shells on Friday night in an extremely intense effort on both sides of the ball at the Blazers’ on-campus practice field.

Friday served as the final practice prior to the Green and Gold working out in full pads, which the Blazers will do on Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m.

During the course of 7-on-7 drills, big hits were given out on defense by linebackers Shaq Jones and Marvin Burdette.  The offense countered with great deep ball catches from wide receivers Jamarcus Nelson and Patrick Hearn.

Wide receiver coach Ron Sigler touched on not only the depth the Blazers have at wide out, but also how the veterans have helped push the younger players at the receiver position.

“Everybody is contributing and doing a good job so far for us,” Sigler said.  “They compete everyday and they push each other and are trying to get better. (Practice) is a 1,000 miles-an-hour and they like it.”

The 2012 Blazers, which host Troy on Sept. 1 at Legion Field in the season opener, return their top three reception leaders in Jackie Williams, Patrick Hearn and Nick Adams.  Nelson also returns to the group, after hauling in a team-best four touch down catches during his freshman campaign.
