The Rice Owls will open play in the revamped Conference USA football lineup on September 28 when they welcome the Florida Atlantic Owls to Rice Stadium as part of their 2013 home football schedule which was released by Conference USA on Wednesday.

Rice opens the 2013 campaign on August 31 when they travel to College Station to take on Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M. After a bye week the following Saturday, the Owls open a set of three straight contests in the city of Houston with the home opener vs. the Kansas Jayhawks, who will be returning to Rice Stadium for the first time since the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl.

The following week, Rice and Houston will meet to decide the Bayou Bucket at Reliant Stadium. This will be the first time since 2004 that the Bucket battle will be decided in a non-conference game as Houston moves to the Big East this year.

The first appearance of Florida Atlantic follows on September 28, then the Owls hit the road for three consecutive weeks, traveling to Tulsa (October 5), UTSA (October 12) and New Mexico State (October 19).

The Owls make a brief return home to host UTEP on October 19, then head back on the road for a conference game at North Texas (November 2). After a second bye week on November 9, the Owls will close with two of the last three at home. They will host Louisiana Tech on November 16 and travel to UAB on November 23 before celebrating their annual senior day by hosting Tulane on November 30.

Conference USA football in 2013 will feature seven teams in both the East and West Divisions. East Carolina, FAU, FIU, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss and UAB comprise the East Division, while Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, Tulane, Tulsa, UTEP and UTSA make up the West Division.

Each school will play every team in its division once for six games, while playing two cross-over opponents from the opposite division. The 2013 schedule has 14 playing weeks, which provides for two open dates for each team. The schedule is a one-year model, meaning that as the conference lineup changes for the 2014 season, opponents may change and locations of games for that season are not yet determined.

A schedule of televised games will be released at a later date. Conference USA's national television partners are Fox Sports Media Group and CBS Sports Network for regular season games. The league's ninth annual Championship Game, pitting the champions of the East and West Divisions, is scheduled for Saturday, December 7 and will be televised by ESPN or ESPN 2.

Dates are subject to change and game times for all Rice home games in 2013 are pending final selections by Conference USA's television partners and will be released at a later date.
