Ja'Terian Douglas rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns to lead Tulsa to a 66-16 victory over Nicholls State Saturday evening in front of a crowd of 19,139 fans at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
The Golden Hurricane (2-1) totaled 566 yards of offense, including 333 yards on the ground. Zack Langer also found the end zone twice after rushing for 67 yards on 15 carries. Cody Green completed 10-of-15 passes for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Backup Kalen Henderson completed six passes for 55 yards and ran three times for 27 yards after entering the game in relief of Green in the second quarter.
Seven different TU receivers caught a pass in the game, led by Jordan James' four catches for 51 yards and Keyarris Garrett's four catches for 50 yards. Garrett and Willie Carter were the recipients of Green's two touchdown passes.
Nicholls State (2-0) gained 370 total yards, including 222 rushing and 148 in the air. Colonel quarterback Landry Klann completed 10-of-19 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown. Marcus Washington led NSU in rushing with 15 carries for 91 yards, while LaQuintin Caston ran seven times for 86 yards and a touchdown.
Long Douglas runs on each of its first two drives gave Tulsa an early 14-0 lead. On the third play of the game Ja'Terian Douglas raced 67 yards for a touchdown. On the following drive, he ran 73 yards on the first play to eventually set up an Alex Singleton dive into the end zone.
The Hurricane used six plays on its next possession, driving 50 yards to extend its lead to 21-0 on a 10-yard Watts rush.
Nicholls State got on the board with a 63-yard touchdown run by LaQuintin Caston with 2:30 left in the first quarter.
TU pushed its lead to 28-0 when Willie Carter caught a 31-yard catch-and-run toss from Cody Green. Tulsa scored 28 points in the first quarter for the first time since Oct. 18, 2008 when it scored 28 in the opening quarter against UTEP.
The Golden Hurricane scored on its fifth straight possession to begin the game when Green found Keyarris Garrett with an 11-yard lob in the corner of the end zone. The play capped a 81 yard drive that took 11 plays that took 2:56 to give TU a 35-6 lead. It was Tulsa's longest drive of the first half.
After is first punt of the game, the Hurricane needed three plays to travel just 36 yards, as Douglas sprinted into the end zone from 11 yards out to give TU a 42-6 lead. The Colonels added a field goal before halftime, when Andrew Dolan's 40 yarder capped an 11-play, 54-yard drive to make the score 42-9.
A Schwarz 23-yard field goal with 7:13 remaining in the third quarter extended Tulsa's lead to 45-9.
On the next Nicholls State possession, McCoil picked off his 14th career pass, breaking the school record. His INT set up an eight-yard touchdown run by Langer. It was the first career touchdown for the redshirt freshman.
Singleton scored his second touchdown of the night with a three-yard rush, capping an eight-play, 45-yard drive to give TU a 59-9 lead with 13:23 left in the game.
Nicholls State put its second touchdown on the board when Klann connected with Aldaro Russell for a 49-yard touchdown to make the score 59-16.
Langer's second touchdown of the game - a one-yard run - completed a 75-yard drive that lasted 12 plays and made the 66-16 final score.
Tulsa returns to action Saturday, Sept. 22, when it plays host to Fresno State at 7 p.m. at H.A. Chapman Stadium. The game will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
