Southern Miss junior Jerrold Brooks scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Golden Eagles to a 69-67 road win at Georgia State. East Carolina also added to its win column, and improved to 6-0 at Minges Coliseum, with a 62-60 victory against Gardner-Webb.

C-USA MEN'S BASKETBALL SHOOTING STARS

  • Southern Miss came back from an 11-point deficit with 12 minutes to play to shock host Georgia State, 69-67. Junior F Jerrold Brooks (Rochester, N.Y.) led the Golden Eagles with a career-high 23 points, including four three-pointers. Senior Dwayne Davis (Phildelphia, Pa.) added 12 points and five rebounds and classmate Jonathan Mills (Chicago, Ill.) grabbed a game-high nine boards.
  • The Pirates made four straight free throws to tie the game at 58, then East Carolina defeated visiting Gardner-Webb, 62-60, to impoved to 6-0 on its home court. East Carolina connected on 57.7 percent of its first half shots, while holding Gardner-Webb to just 25.8 percent shooting. Senior Maurice Kemp (Miami, Fla.) led all scorers with a season-high 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting with nine rebounds. Junior F Robert Sampson (Atlanta, Ga.) grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and blocked three shots with scoring six points.
  • Sampson is now the fifth C-USA player to average more than nine rebounds per game this season, all ranking among the Top 50 nationally. He joins Houston sophomore TaShawn Thomas (10.9 rpg), Tulane junior Josh Davis (10.5), UCF senior Keith Clanton (9.7) and Marshall senior Dennis Tinnon (9.5).
  • SMU forced 15 turnovers, but dropped a 62-53 decision to host Utah. It was the second meeting between the two teams, with the Mustangs winning 62-55 on Nov. 28 at Moody Coliseum. Junior G Nick Russell (Duncanville, Texas) led the Mustangs with 13 points. He has scored in double figures in eight of 11 games this season. Sophomore C Cannen Cunningham (Arlington, Texas) added 12 points and eight rebounds.
  • UCF saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday, falling to in-state foe Miami, 72-50. Senior F Keith Clanton (Orlando, Fla.) led UCF with 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in 39 minutes. Clanton now has 1,412 career points. The Knights, who entered the game first in the country in 3-point field goal percentage and second in field goal percentage, shot 22.7 percent from deep against the Hurricane defense.
