Dec. 10, 2012

Houston sophomore TaShawn Thomas and Memphis freshman Shaq Goodwin were selected as the C-USA Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, in a vote from a media panel representing the 12 member schools. Thomas averaged a double-double for the week with 21 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in wins at TCU and against Texas Southern. Goodwin was instrumental in wins over Ohio and Austin Peay as the Tigers earned their 150th victory inside FedExForum. The freshman averaged 12 points and 8.5 rebounds.

Sophomore, F, Killeen, Texas

Thomas helped lead the Cougars to road win at TCU and a home win against city-rival Texas Southern, averaging a double-double with 21.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Tuesday's win at TCU was the Cougars' first road win against a member of the Big 12. He scored nine of the Cougars' final 14 points against the Horned Frogs to seal the victory and posted his team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebound. Thomas then tied his career high with 23 points in Saturday's overtime win against Texas Southern. He shot 10-of-19 from the field and fell just one rebound shy of his 15th career double-double. Saturday marked his fourth 20-point game this season and of his career. Thomas currently leads the league in rebounding (10.7 rpg) and ranks second in scoring (17.6 ppg). This is his first career C-USA Player of the Week honor, but he was a two-time Freshman of the Week selection last season.

Freshman, F, Decatur, Ga.

Goodwin averaged 12.0 points, 8.5 boards, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals in the Tigers' wins over Ohio and Austin Peay. He shot 66.7 percent from floor and 72.7 percent from the free-thrown line. In Wednesday's win over Ohio, Goodwin nearly posted a second-straight double-double with a 20-point, nine-board performance. He scored the Tigers' first 10 points of the second half to extend a 36-28 halftime lead against the Bobcats to 46-34. Against Austin Peay, Goodwin grabbed eight rebounds, dished out a season-high five assists and tied a season best with four steals. This is his first C-USA Freshman of the Week honor.
