Men's Basketball Signs Obi
Nov. 21, 2012
On the eve of the DirecTV Classic in Anaheim, Rice University head men’s basketball coach Ben Braun announced the signing of 6-9 forward Sean Obi (Kaduna, Nigeria/Green Farms Academy [Connecticut]) to a National Letter of Intent in the early signing period.
Braun added, “Sean is a tremendous presence in the post. He is an exceptional rebounder and consummate team player. He is also an outstanding young man and excellent student who will greatly impact our program.”
As a junior, Obi led the nation in rebounding with 20.0 boards per game to accompany an 18.2 scoring average for coach Doug Scott. He notched a double-double in all 23 games last season and led Green Farms Academy to the NEPSAC quarterfinals with an 18-5 record. He is ranked as Connecticut’s No. 2 player in his class by ESPN.com and has a streak of 45 consecutive double-doubles dating back to his sophomore season.
Obi said, “Rice is such a wonderful school and everyone has been so supportive. I am looking forward to playing for Rice.”
Obi played for the AAU Connecticut Basketball Club alongside current Detroit Piston Andre Drummond. In his sophomore year at Green Farms Academy, he tallied 20.6 points and 15.7 rebounds per game.
The 245-pound forward from Connecticut’s Green Farms Academy is the fifth member of Rice’s 2013-14 class, joining 6-5 wing Drew Bender (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle High School), 6-8 forward Denzel Davis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep), 6-10 center Andrew Drone (Junction, Ill./Gallatin County High School) and 6-3 guard Marcus Jackson (Acton, Calif./Pacific Hills High School).
The Owls (1-2) face Georgia Tech on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT in the DirecTV Classic opener on ESPNU. Rice returns to the court on Friday to take on either Cal or Drake in the second round on either ESPN2 or ESPNU, depending on Thursday’s outcome.
