Houston and SMU improved to 3-0 on the season with wins Saturday, while No. 16 Memphis also picked up a victory over Samford. The Cougars had a big performance off the bench from sophomore Joseph Young, who scored 23 points and was 8-of-8 from the free-throw line, in an 87-47 win over Grambling State. SMU picked up a road win by defeating Texas State, 78-75. Junior G Nick Russell and sophomore Jalen Jones both set career-highs with 25 and 24 points, respectively. Three Tigers scored in double figures in a 65-54 win against Samford as the first round game in the Battle 4 Atlantis, which begins in Paradise Island, Bahamas on Thursday.

  • No. 16 Memphis defeated Samford, 65-54, in Saturday's opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis. Sophomore Adonis Thomas (Memphis, Tenn.) was the leading scorer with 16 points, while juniors Antonio Barton (Baltimore, Md.) and Joe Jackson (Memphis, Tenn.) added 14 and 13, respectively. Jackson added four assists and three steals.
  • Houston sophomore Joseph Young (Houston, Texas) came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points in the Cougars' 87-47 victory against Grambling State. Young added five assists and was 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. With the win, Houston is opening the season 3-0.
  • SMU is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since the 2000-01 season following a 78-75 road win at Texas State Saturday. Junior G Nick Russell (Duncanville, Texas) and sophomore Jalen Jones (Dallas, Texas) both set career-highs in the game. Russell scored 25 points and grabbed six rebounds. Jones tossed in 24 points, shooting 8-of-13 from the field, to improve on the personal best he had set in the Mustangs last outing, Thursday against TCU, when he scored 21 points.
  • The Mustangs blocked 11 shots in the game at Texas State. That total with the fifth most in school history. Sophomore C Cannen Cunningham (Arlington, Texas) set a career-high with four blocks.
  • Rice fell to Temple, 77-63, in the "Battle of the Owls" Saturday in Philadelphia. Senior G Tamir Jackson (Paterson, N.J.) led Rice with 17 points and 12 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double.
  • Tulsa dropped its final game of the NUCDF Challenge, and its first game of the season, with a 92-76 defeat to Cal State Northridge Saturday. Three players scored in double figures for the Golden Hurricane (3-1), led by 15 points from sophomore F Rashad Smith (Plano, Texas). Freshmen James Woodard (Edmond, Okla.) scored 14 points and Rashad Ray (New Orleans, La.) added 13 points for TU.
  • In a game that saw 10 ties and 10 lead changes, Marshall dropped a 78-77 decision to South Dakota State in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. The Herd will play its third game in three days Sunday at 3 p.m. against the host school Hofstra.
  • Marshall lost despite outrebounding SDSU 42-29. Leading the effort on the boards was junior F Elijah Pittman (Covington, Ky.) with 14 boards, seven offensive, to go with 16 points for his first double-double of the season.
  • Junior G DeAndre Kane (Pittsbuurgh, Pa.)scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-18 shooting including 2-of-5 from three-point range. As the team's point guard, he recorded eight assists to just three turnovers while playing 39 minutes. Senior F Dennis Tinnon (Green Bay, Wis.) and junior swingman D.D. Scarver (Birmingham, Ala.) also scored in double figures with 10 points each.
