SMU, Southern Miss and Tulsa each improved to 2-0 to start the season with road wins Thursday night. The Mustangs were backed by career performances from Jalen Jones and Ryan Manuel in a 64-61 win at TCU. Southern Miss has opened its season with back-to-back overtime contests, but won both. Thursday, the Golden Eagles' junior Dwayne Davis registered his first career double-double and scored the game-winning basket in 62-60 victory over Georgia. Tulsa also picked up a win in its first game as part of the NUCDF Basketball Challenge, defeating Northern Kentucky, 76-56.

C-USA MEN'S BASKETBALL SHOOTING STARS

  • SMU sophomores Jalen Jones (Dallas, Texas) and Ryan Manuel (Houston, Texas) registered career performances as the Mustangs defeated non-conference rival TCU, 64-61, in Fort Worth. Jones tossed in 21 points with a personal best four three-pointers. Manual tallied career-highs of 16 points and five assists. SMU is 2-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season and the Mustangs lead the overall series, 103-85.
  • Southern Miss was on the road and defeated host Georgia, 62-60, in overtime Thursday in the opening game of the 2012 Progressive Legends Classic. The Golden Eagles also won their season opener against Western Kentucky in extra time and improved to 2-0 on the season. Junior G Jerrold Brooks (Rochester, N.Y.) led the team in scoring with a game-high 17 points, while junior F Dwayne Davis (Philadelphia, Pa.) registered his first double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Davis also hit the game-winning shot with 30 seconds to play.
  • Sophomore F Rashad Smith (Plano, Texas) scored 23 points, 18 in the second half, to lead Tulsa to a 76-56 win over Northern Kentucky in the NUCDF Basketball Challenge Thursday in San Diego. Senior Scottie Haralson (Jackson, Miss.) scored 10 points with a pair of three-pointers, and freshman G Rashad Ray (New Orleans, La.) added nine points. Freshman G Shaquille Harrison (Kansas City, Mo.) led TU with eight rebounds, and he and reigning C-USA Freshman of the Week James Woodard (Edmond, Okla.), who put up eight points, tallied three assists apiece.
  • No. 12 Arizona defeated visiting UTEP, 72-51. Brothers Julian and Chris Washburn (Duncanville/Grand Prairie, Texas) led the Miners with 11 points apiece.
  • UAB held a 37-33 lead at intermission, but No. 13 Creighton made a late surge to defeat the visiting Blazers, 77-60, Wednesday. UAB held preseason All-America candidate Doug McDermott to just five points on the night. Sophomore G Isiah Jones (Pulaski, Ill.) came off the bench to lead UAB with 16 points, while juniors Rod Rucker (Elberton, Ga.) and Jordan Swing (Birmingham, Ala.) each tossed in 12 points. Rucker added seven rebounds.
  • A massive 22-2 run spanning both halves gave Rice a comfortable lead as the Owls defeated St. Edward's, 75-63, Wednesday. Senior G Tamir Jackson (Paterson, N.J.) notched his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-best 15 rebounds to lead the Owls. He sank 8-of-10 free throws and added a pair of assists and two steals in 33 minutes.
  • Freshman G Max Guercy (Arleta, Calif.) also notched double-figure points for the second time the season as the guard led Rice with 17 points on 4-of-5 shooting an 8-of-8 free throws. He swiped a pair of steals and dished out one assist in 35 minutes of action. Sophomore F Seth Gearhart (Wilsonville, Ore.) posted a career-high in points for a second-straight game, notching 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting and six free throws.
