C-USA Men's Basketball Specialty Awards Announced
March 12, 2013
IRVING, Texas - All-Conference USA first-team selection Dwayne Davis of Southern Miss, Houston freshman Danuel House and the Memphis duo of D.J. Stephens and Chris Crawford received the 2012-13 C-USA Specialty Awards. Davis was named the C-USA Newcomer of the Year, while House was the Freshman of the Year. Stephens, a C-USA third-team selection, highlighted the All-Defensive Team as the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year. Crawford came off the bench of the regular-season champion Tigers and was named the Sixth Player of the Year. All awards were voted on by the conference's head coaches and select media.
Davis adds to a week of awards as he earned Player of the Week and All-Conference first team honors. He tossed in a career-high 35 points at Marshall on March 5, then followed that up with 34 against UCF in his home finale March 9. His previous career-best of 28 came on the road against a nationally ranked Memphis team. During non-conference play, he was named to the Progressive Legends Classic All-Tournament Team and registered a double-double in the Golden Eagles' 62-60 win at Georgia.
House was selected as the C-USA Freshman of the Year as he ranked among the top five freshman leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and steals. A three-time C-USA Freshman of the Week honoree, he registered some of his best games against conference foes. House scored a career-high 28 points against SMU, tallied a personal-best five 3-pointers against Marshall and recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds against UCF. House is joined on the all-freshman team by Tulsa duo James Woodard and D'Andre Wright, Rice guard Max Guercy and Memphis forward Shaq Goodwin.
Stephens is the league's top shot blocker, averaging 2.26 per game, and ranks among the top 40 nationally. He also leads the Tigers in rebounding with 6.7 per game. His high-flying prowess has been among a number of highlight reels, he has registered more than 50 dunks this season and 100-plus for his career. Southern Miss senior Jonathan Mills was a repeat selection to the all-defensive team and he and Stephens were joined on this year's all-defensive squad by all-conference players Isaiah Sykes of UCF, TaShawn Thomas of Houston and Julian Washburn of UTEP.
Crawford came off the bench for the Tigers in all 16 conference contests and has been a key to the Tigers 27-4 overall mark and perfect 16-0 record in C-USA. He ranks fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 9.3 points per game, and ranks second in assists with 104. Crawford scored a season-high 20 points in the Tigers' season finale win over UAB March 9 and had 15 double-figure scoring games for the year.
