March 9, 2011
EL PASO, Texas - UAB senior guard Aaron Johnson has been named the Conference USA Player of the Year for the 2010-11 season, while Blazers head coach Mike Davis has been named the league's Coach of the Year, it was announced today prior to the opening of the 2011 Buick Conference USA Men's Basketball Championship.
Johnson, a First Team All-Conference selection and an All-Defensive team choice, has had a record-breaking campaign in 2011. The Chicago, Ill. native enters the 2011 Buick Conference USA Championship leading the country with an average of 7.9 assists per contest, while also contributing 11.1 points and 1.4 steals a game.
The record holder in career assists (653) at UAB has been nearly unstoppable on the court this year, setting the school record for single-season assists (228), season assist per game average (7.9), single-game assists (14 on two occasions) and most double-digit assist games in a campaign (10).
A Bob Cousy Award nominee, Johnson's brightest moments have come in league play beginning with the triple overtime victory vs. UTEP (1/8) in the C-USA opener for both teams. In the 100-97 Blazer victory, Johnson recorded 26 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds in 54 minutes of action. He has been sensational down the stretch as well, leading the Blazers to the program's first-ever outright C-USA regular season title and the tournament's No. 1 seed. Over the past three contests, Johnson has recorded 33 assists and just three turnovers, while he has 58 assists and only 16 turnovers over his past six games.
In his fifth season at UAB, Davis takes home his first C-USA Coach of the Year award after guiding the Blazers to their first Conference USA regular season championship since sharing the title in the 2003-04 season. It is the school's first outright conference title since winning the 1989-90 Sun Belt Conference Championship.
Davis owns a 53-27 (.663) record vs. Conference USA opponents at UAB and is 107-55 (.660) overall. His Blazer teams have won at least 11 games in conference play for each of the last three seasons and last season UAB tied the school record for victories in a season with 25. During his 11 seasons as a head coach, Davis owns a career record of 222-134 (.624). A former National Championship Game coach while at Indiana (2002), he has guided the Blazers to postseason play in each of his first three seasons at UAB.
The Blazers (22-7 overall, 12-4 in C-USA) enter the Buick Conference USA Championship with a four game winning streak. UAB will face either East Carolina or UCF in a quarterfinal round game on Thursday.
