Go C-USA!

March 3, 2008

Houston senior Robert McKiver and UAB junior Robert Vaden shared this week's C-USA Player of the Week after both gave some of the conference's - and the nation's - best offensive performances of the season. McKiver tossed in 52 points in the Cougars win on Feb. 27, breaking the C-USA single-game scoring mark and breaking a Hofheinz Pavilion record that was previously held by Indiana State's Larry Bird. That same night, Vaden tossed in 41 points with nine 3-pointers. He then added 30 points in the Blazers' win Saturday to clinch a first-round bye in the 2008 Conference USA Men's Basketball Championship. The Conference USA Player of the Week is voted on by a select media panel covering the league.

CONFERENCE USA MEN'S BASKETBALL
CO-PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (March 3)

Robert McKiver, Houston
Senior, Guard, New Haven, Conn.

McKiver recorded the best offensive performance in NCAA Division I play this season following his 52-point output in the Cougars win over Southern Miss, setting the Conference USA single-game record on 17-of-34 shooting. He became only the fourth player in school history to score at least 50 points in a game, and broke the Hofheinz Pavilion-record of 44 points which had been held by Indiana State's Larry Bird (3/9/77) and UNLV's Bob Florence (3/27/73). He followed that up with a 29-point effort on the road at East Carolina, when he also led the Cougars with eight rebounds and added three assists. This is McKiver's third C-USA Player of the Week honor this season and fifth of his career.

Robert Vaden, UAB
Junior, Guard, Indianapolis, Ind.

Vaden led UAB to a pair of league wins, averaging 35.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game this week. He shot 52.7 percent from the floor (56.0 percent from beyond the arc). In the process, he broke or tied nearly every single-game school record. In the 88-81 victory at UTEP Feb. 27, he connected on 12-of-21 shots from the floor and 9-of-14 from beyond the arc for a career-high 41 points. Vaden broke the school records for 3s made in a game (9), road points (41) and single-game points (tied with 41). Vaden also broke the single-season school record with 127 threes. He followed up with 30 points in the 69-44 win over Tulane on March 1. He hit 11-of-11 free throws against Tulane, which tied for the fourth-best performance in school history. Vaden was also named the CollegeHoops.net National Player of the Week. This is his second C-USA Player of the Week honor this season.
