Jonathon Simmons

Feb. 20, 2012

Houston junior forward Jonathon Simmons earned his first C-USA Player of the Week honor following a career 28-point performance in the Cougars' 73-71 win over league-leading Southern Miss Saturday. Tulane guard Ricky Tarrant earned his seventh C-USA Freshman of the Week honor, and record fifth in a row, as he averaged 26.5 ppg in games against Memphis and UAB, including matching his career-best with 33 points against the Blazers. Awards are chosen by a vote from a media panel representing the 12 member schools.

Junior, F, Houston, Texas

Simmons was the Cougars' leading performer in their lone game of the week, scoring a career-high 28 points in a 73-71 victory against Conference USA co-leader Southern Miss in Hofheinz Pavilion. He was 10-of-18 from the first and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Simmons also grabbed eight rebounds in the game. In his seventh 20-point game of the season, he topped his previous best of 26 points at Texas State on Dec. 6 and the 28 points ties junior forward Kirk Van Slyke for the highest point total by any Cougar this season. Simmons hit his only three-pointer of the contest as time expired at the half, giving UH a 38-27 lead heading into the break. This is his first C-USA Player of the Week honor.

Freshman, G, Pleasant Grove, Ala.

Tarrant averaged 26.5 points in a pair of C-USA games this week. The Pleasant Grove, Ala., native matched his career high with 33 points in a loss at UAB, including 29 points in the final 13:20 of the game. In that run, he drained five 3-pointers and hit all 10 of his free throw attempts. Tulane trailed by 17 before Tarrant scored eight straight points for the Green Wave that eventually cut the deficit to three before falling, 81-73, to the Blazers. Tarrant also led Tulane with 20 points in a loss at home to Memphis earlier in the week. This time, Tarrant posted 15 of his 20 in the first half as Tulane held a 33-32 lead at the break. The freshman has now scored in double figures in 12 straight games and reached the 20-plus mark seven times, including a pair of 33-point performances. This is his record fifth-straight C-USA Freshman of the Week award and his seventh honor this season.
