Feb. 13 Men's Basketball Notebook
Feb. 13, 2013
CBS Sports Network will feature one of five C-USA men's basketball games Wednesday. No. 22/25 Memphis hosts UCF for a primetime tip at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on CBS Sports. The Tigers are riding a 14-game win streak and hold sole possession of the top spot in the C-USA standings at 9-0. UCF is currently in a tie for second place with Southern Miss and snapped the Golden Eagles' 10-game win streak last week.
Two players to watch will be reigning C-USA Player of the Week Geron Johnson of Memphis and UCF junior forward Isaiah Sykes. Johnson scored a career-best 25 points, along with eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the Tigers' last outing. He may have flirted with a triple-double, but Sykes earned his nation's-best second triple-double of the year in a win over East Carolina on Feb. 9. Sykes tallied 20 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and career-best 11 assists for the 15th triple-double performance in C-USA history.
Southern Miss will be back in action despite the campus being closed this week following Sunday's tornado in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles will host Tulane at 7 p.m. CT as scheduled in Reed Green Arena, where Southern Miss has won 23 of its last 24 games. Tulane is coming off back-to-back wins, including a rally from a 19-point deficit to beat Houston on Feb. 9. It is the 75th game in the series that dates back to 1948.
UTEP travels to Houston for a 7 p.m. CT tip in the first of two games this month. Both teams are coming off close losses on Feb. 9 and will be looking to rebound Wednesday. Houston boasts a pair of C-USA's top scorers in sophomores TaShawn Thomas and Joseph Young. The Miners have been led in scoring by eight different players this season.
Two games Wednesday are scheduled to start a little earlier with 7 p.m. ET starts. East Carolina hosts UAB, while Rice visits Marshall. The Pirates earned a 91-85 win at UAB last month, but the Blazers have won three of their last four and riding some momentum. Marshall is 9-3 and home, and the Owls are looking for their first road win of the season. SMU and Tulsa have a break Wednesday before returning to the hardwood Saturday, Feb. 16.
