Feb. 11, 2013

Memphis junior guard Geron Johnson and Tulsa forward D'Andre Wright were voted the C-USA Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, by a media panel representing the 12 member schools. It was the first such honor for both. Johnson averaged 22 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a pair of Tiger victories that extended their win streak to 14 straight games and give them sole possession of first place in C-USA. Wright made his return from an injury in December and was crucial in a 74-70 road win at UTEP, scoring 25 points and grabbing eight rebounds for the Golden Hurricane.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
GERON JOHNSON, MEMPHIS
Junior, G, Dayton, Ohio

Johnson helped lead Memphis to road victories at SMU and Southern Miss, extending the Tigers win streak to 14 games in a row and give them sole possession of first place in the C-USA regular-season standings. Johnson averaged 22.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals in the two wins. In the nationally-televised contest at Southern Miss between the league's top-two teams, he scored a game-high tying and career-best 25 points to lead the Tigers to the 89-76 win. He also added eight boards, seven assists and four steals against the Golden Eagles. Johnson helped seal the win over Southern Miss at the foul line, going 4-of-4 in the final 1:18. Earlier in the week at SMU, he scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He netted 12 of his 19 points in the second half against the Mustangs, including two clutch 3-pointers. This is his first career C-USA Player of the Week honor.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
D'ANDRE WRIGHT, TULSA
Freshman, F, Lawton, Okla.

Wright scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Tulsa to a 74-70 Conference USA road win at UTEP Saturday. It was his first significant playing time since suffering a leg injury in December. The rookie from Lawton, Okla., was dominant in just 21 minutes, as he made 9-of-12 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws in the game. His performance led the Golden Hurricane as it completed its sweep of the Miners this regular season. Wright made 5-of-6 free throws and 3-of-4 field goals with five rebounds in the second half, holding off the Miner surge. He stepped up to the challenge of playing 21 minutes - as many as he had played in his previous two games combined as he worked back to full game-strength - and was strong at the end of the game as Tulsa's only post player with fewer than four fouls. This is his first C-USA Freshman of the Week award.
