Feb. 3, 2014

Middle Tennessee senior forward Shawn Jones and UTEP's Vince Hunter earned Player and Freshman of the Week honors, respectively, for games through Feb. 1. Jones averaged a double-double on the week with 21 ppg and 10.5 rpg in a pair of wins for the Blue Raiders. Hunter poured in a career-high 26 points, tying the freshman school record, in the Miners' win over Louisiana Tech to take a share of first place in the current C-USA standings. Awards are selected by a media panel representing the 16 member schools.

Senior, 6-8, F, Hialeah, Fla.

Jones averaged a double-double of 21.0 points per game and 10.5 rebounds a contest with back-to-back double-doubles in wins against East Carolina and Old Dominion. He put up a game-high 22 points and pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds, while swatting five blocked shots against the Pirates. Jones then posted his eighth double-double of the season, and 12th of his career, against ODU with 20 points and 10 boards, marking his sixth 20-point performance of the season. This is the second C-USA Player of the Week honor for Jones.

Freshman, 6-8, F, Detroit

Hunter tied the UTEP freshman record for single-game points with a career-high 26 in an 89-79 win over Louisiana Tech Jan. 30. He followed up that performance by scoring 11 of his 14 points in the second half as the Miners rallied for a 68-57 victory over Rice Feb. 1. He shot 8-for-12 from the field and went to the line 16 times (making 10) versus the Bulldogs, while adding nine rebounds and two blocks in 38 minutes. He joined Giovanni St. Amant (versus Hawaii on Jan. 2, 2003) as the only UTEP freshmen to score 26 points in a game. Hunter was 7-for-7 from the line in the second half versus Rice, as the Miners erased a nine-point deficit by closing the game with a 30-10 run. He also dished out a season-high five assists against the Owls. For the week, Hunter averaged 20 points, nine rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals, shooting 57.9 percent (11-for-19) from the field and 18-for-25 from the line.
