Conference Play for @CUSAMBK Opens Thursday
Jan. 8, 2014
Conference play for the 2014 C-USA men's basketball season tips off Thursday, Jan. 9, with 12 teams in action and 14 teams competing on the hardwood Saturday, Jan. 11. Fans will also be treated to a Sunday C-USA contest when Tulsa hosts Southern Miss at 12 p.m. CT in a game that will be nationally televised on FS1.
Of the 14 conference games scheduled for the weekend, 11 will be first-time match-ups for the schools as members of Conference USA. The league has a new look this season as East Carolina, Marshall, Rice, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB and UTEP welcomed eight institutions to Conference USA on July 1, 2013: Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion and UTSA.
Thursday's nightcap features the one C-USA continued rivalry when Tulsa hosts Tulane for an 8 p.m. CT tip at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The game will be televised on CSS. The Golden Hurricane has a 10-4 edge since the two became conference foes, but it is one of the most hotly contested series with nine of those 14 games decided by four points or less.
Charlotte visits UTEP for a 9 p.m. ET nationally-televised contest on CBS SN. Although Charlotte was a charter member of C-USA and resided here between 1995-2005, the Miners did not join until 2005. UTEP is riding a four-game home court win streak at the Don Haskins Center, which will host the 2014 C-USA Men's Basketball Championship March 11-15.
The first official C-USA men's basketball game of the season tips in Ruston, La., as Louisiana Tech hosts Florida Atlantic at 6:30 p.m. CT. The Bulldogs are also on a four-game win streak, including a 102-98 overtime victory at Oklahoma and a 126-point output against Longwood. Reigning C-USA Player of the Week Alex Hamilton led the way against the Sooners with a career-high 31 points. However, FAU boasts the league's second-leading scorer in senior Pablo Bertone as he averaged 19.3 points per game against non-conference foes.
Standings leader Southern Miss (13-2) is on the road for a 7 p.m. CT contest at North Texas. The Golden Eagles are receiving votes in the most recent coaches poll, but both teams are riding four-game win streaks. Southern Miss is road-tested as this will already be its 10th game away from home this season, while North Texas has compiled an impressive 7-1 record at The Super Pit.
Marshall travels to San Antonio for a 7 p.m. CT tip that will be televised on Time Warner Texas. The Herd have been fueled by the freshman duo of Kareem Canty and Ryan Taylor, the current C-USA Freshman of the Week. Canty is a three-time Freshman of the Week honoree and leads Marshall with 16.4 ppg. Also, his 6.9 assists per game this season ranks sixth nationally. UTSA has looked to its upperclassmen as senior guard Devon Agusi has averaged 24 points in the Roadrunners' last two outings.
Rice welcomes FIU to Tudor Fieldhouse for a 7 p.m. CT showdown. Both are looking to snap three-game losing streaks, but their non-conference foes have included Georgetown, Harvard, Texas and reigning national champion Louisville.
