Go C-USA! Alex Hamilton
Alex Hamilton

Jan. 6, 2014

Louisiana Tech sophomore guard Alex Hamilton and Marshall freshman forward Ryan Taylor won the Conference USA Player and Freshman of the Week honors, respectively, for games through Jan. 5. Hamilton averaged 22.5 points in a pair of wins for the Bulldogs, including a career-high 31 points in a road win at Oklahoma. Taylor averaged a team-best 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in three Herd games for the week. It is the first weekly award for both this season. Awards are selected by a media panel representing the 16 member schools.

Sophomore, 6-4, G, Chipley, Fla.

Hamilton scored a career-high 31 points in the Bulldogs' 102-98 overtime win against Oklahoma Dec. 30. With 10 minutes to go in the second half against the Sooners, Hamilton only had six points in the box score. Then the sophomore guard suddenly became unstoppable, scoring 15 points throughout the rest of regulation. He also scored 10 of the team's 17 overtime points in leading the Bulldogs to victory. In a Jan. 4 game versus Longwood, Hamilton became more of a distributor than a scorer, dishing out a career-high 12 assists along with 14 points for his second career double-double. This is the first C-USA Player of the Week honor for Hamilton.

Freshman, 6-5, F, Indianapolis, Ind.

Taylor averaged a team-best 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game over the three-game week. He shot 20-of-35 from the field and was better than 50 percent shooting in all three games on the week. Taylor recorded his fourth career double-double in a win over Presbyterian (Jan. 5) with 18 points and 12 rebounds, with five on the offensive glass. Earlier in the week, he scored 18 points at South Carolina (Dec. 30) as the top scorer for the Herd and added three blocks. He tossed in 16 points Jan. 2 against an Akron team that has made six-straight postseason appearances. This is Taylor's first C-USA Freshman of the Week honor and the fourth time a Marshall student-athlete has received the award as teammate Kareem Canty won three consecutive weeks in December.
