Jan. 2, 2013
Conference USA men's basketball tips off 2013 with seven games on the schedule Wednesday. CBS Sports Network features a doubleheader beginning at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT, while the other five games will be available on the C-USA Digital Network.
UCF hosts rival USF in a rematch Wednesday in the first game on CBS Sports. The Knights won the season opener against USF, 74-56, Nov. 10 for their first win in Tampa since 1978. Tonight's game tips at 8 p.m. ET in Orlando. Following that game, UTEP rides its three-game win streak into Fort Collins, Colo., for an 8 p.m. MT tip against Colorado State. The Rams are receiving votes in the national polls under first-year head coach Larry Eustachy, the reigning C-USA Gene Bartow Coach of the Year. Eustachy led Southern Miss for eight seasons, compiling 142 wins and earning a NCAA berth for the Golden Eagles in 2012. The C-USA connection is not the only thing that makes him familiar to UTEP head coach Tim Floyd, who hired Eustachy as an assistant coach while at Idaho in 1986-87.
East Carolina, Marshall, SMU, Tulsa and UAB each tip at 7 p.m. local time in front of their home crowds Wednesday. East Carolina puts its 7-0 season record at Minges Coliseum on the line as host to Campbell. UAB is 6-0 at Bartow Arena and will welcome Georgia Southern to town. SMU is 5-0 at Moody Coliseum, despite only playing one home game the entire month of December. The Mustangs face a challenge tonight as host to an undefeated Wyoming team. Delaware State visits Marshall, while Buffalo is at Tulsa.
Houston and Southern Miss host games on Thursday. The Cougars are on a five-game win streak heading into a contest with Texas-Pan American. Southern Miss has won 19 straight home games, including a perfect 15-0 mark last season, as the fifth longest streak in the nation. (The Golden Eagles will move up the national chart if UTEP defeats fourth-place Southern Miss on its court).
Friday features Memphis at intrastate rival Tennessee for a 7 p.m. CT tip on ESPN2. The Tigers picked up a pair of wins over the weekend at FedExForum and will be playing their first true road game of the season. Tulane defends its 9-0 record at Devlin Fieldhouse as host to Wofford on Friday at 7 p.m. CT. The Green Wave is coming off a 53-50 road win at Alabama behind an 18-point, 12-rebound performance from C-USA Player of the Week Josh Davis.
