WICHITA, Kan. - James Woodard scored 15 points, but Tulsa fell at Wichita State, 86-60, Wednesday evening at Charles Koch Arena.
D'Andre Wright added seven points and eight rebounds for the Golden Hurricane (4-3). The Shockers (7-0) were led by Carl Hall, who totaled 16 points and 11 rebounds, and by Cleanthony Early, who scored 13 points.
Tulsa shot 41 percent from the field and totaled 35 rebounds, while Wichita State shot 52 percent and had 41 rebounds. Scottie Haralson and Kauri Black each added nine points, and Shaquille Harrison scored seven points with six rebounds.
"This is a tough place to play. Wichita State came out with a lot of energy, and we weren't able to match their energy," Tulsa Head Coach Danny Manning said. "There were some stretches we competed a bit, but we have to do a better job of competing, especially on the glass. They got too many second chance opportunities. They're well-coached, they play extremely hard, and they got off to a great start. We still expect more from our team."
Tulsa took an early 10-7 lead on a jumper by Wright, and led 12-10 on a jump shot by Tim Peete, but Wichita State went on a 14-5 run to move ahead, 24-17, with 5:48 left in the half. The Hurricane cut the deficit to three points at 26-23, with 4:16 on the clock. WSU closed the half with a 12-4 run to take a 38-27 advantage into the locker room.
The Shockers scored the first six points of the second half to extend their lead to 44-27. The Hurricane, however, kept WSU from getting away with a 10-6 spurt that made the score 50-37 a the 15:29 mark.
Wichita State built up a 24-point, 74-50, lead while holding Tulsa without a field goal for five minutes. The Golden Hurricane shaved the deficit down to 76-60, but the Shockers closed the game on a 10-0 run to reach the final margin.
The Golden Hurricane returns home Wednesday, Dec. 5, to face Missouri State at 7 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
