Rice to Host 2013 C-USA Baseball Championship
Nov. 20, 2012
The 2013 Conference USA Baseball Championship will be held at Reckling Park on the campus of Rice University in Houston. The eight-team, pool play event will be held May 22-26 and marks the return of the championship to Rice for the first time since 2006.
"We are pleased to be returning to Reckling Park for our baseball championship next May," said Commissioner Britton Banowsky. "Rice has an outstanding college baseball facility and we know that our players, coaches and fans will enjoy a great week of competition."
Rice has been a regular in hosting postseason baseball. In addition to the 2006 Conference USA Championship, Reckling Park has served as a host venue for NCAA Regionals or Super Regionals in 10 of the last 12 years.
"Rice is thrilled to have the Conference USA Baseball Championship coming back to Reckling Park," said Athletics Director Rick Greenspan. "The City of Houston has earned a great reputation for hosting championship events and I know the great fans who follow C-USA baseball all season long are looking forward to experiencing the kind of hospitality that has become our trademark. Reckling Park has deservedly ranked as one of college baseball's great venues and the return of our conference championship provides another opportunity to showcase it to the country."
The 2013 Conference USA Championship will feature the top eight teams in regular-season league play. Those eight will be split into two four-team pools (or pods), with the winner of each pod playing in a single championship game. Teams are assigned pods based on seed, which are determined by the order of finish in regular-season conference play.
Each team is guaranteed to play three games. Teams in each pod will play all three other teams in its pod. The team with the best composite record in each pod advances to the championship game. Two-way ties in a pod will be broken by head-to-head play. In the case of a three-way tie, the highest seed will advance.
Three games are scheduled on the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of tournament week, with the championship game slated for Sunday afternoon. The championship game will be nationally-televised by CBS Sports Network.
