March 25 Weekend Baseball Roundup
March 26, 2007
The first weekend of conference play saw three of the four series' end in sweeps. East Carolina ran its winning streak to 13 games with three wins over Memphis. Tulane picked up three straight victories at Marshall and Houston won three in a row at UCF. In a meeting of nationally-ranked teams, Rice rebounded from a Friday night loss to Southern Miss to take the final two games of the series from the Golden Eagles.
In non-conference play, UAB dropped two-of-three against UNC Asheville in Birmingham.
East Carolina's 13-game winning streak is now the sixth-longest in Conference USA history. The Pirates own the record, with a 19-game string back in 2004. ECU has now won 17 of 18 games, with the only loss being an extra inning defeat against nationally-ranked N.C. State.
Tulane pulled out the series opener with Marshall in extra innings, 8-7, and then turned in outstanding pitching efforts for the other two victories. Shooter Hunt was solid in Saturday's 4-1 win and Brandon Gomes (complete game with 12 K's) was spectacular in Sunday's 9-0 victory.
Solid pitching was the story of the weekend for Houston, which posted its first road sweep of the season. Aaron Brown opened the series with perhaps his best career outing before Wes Musick threw eight innings of shutout ball with 1) strikeouts on Saturday.
Southern Miss opened with a 9-3 win over Rice on Friday night. The Owls rebounded by rallying for a 5-3 victory on Saturday and then blew open a close game in the late innings on Sunday, winning 18-5, as Joe Savery and Aaron Luna each had four RBI.
