March 17 C-USA Baseball Players of the Week
March 17, 2014
After hitting nearly .700 in five Rice victories, including four against ranked opponents, Owls junior C John Clay Reeves has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week. The C-USA Pitcher of the Week honor went to Louisiana Tech junior RHP Phil Maton, who earned two victories last week for the Bulldogs, including a complete-game conference win at Florida Atlantic.
Reeves went 17-for-25 at the plate (.680 average) to help lead Rice to an undefeated 5-0 week that included wins over No. 27 TCU and a three-game series road sweep of No. 19 ranked C-USA foe FIU. The junior transfer from Navarro College drove in a total of six runs and scored five times. Reeves had three doubles for an .800 slugging percentage and drew one walk for a .692 on-base average. During one Friday-to-Sunday stretch in the FIU series, the Monroe, La., native reached base a total of 10 consecutive times. Reeves' offense was only part of the story, however, as he twice tagged-out would-be FIU runners at home plate - including one play in the bottom of the 12th inning that prevented an FIU victory Friday night.
In a week's span, Maton picked up two big wins for the Bulldogs after allowing just one earned run off four hits in a total of 10.0 innings, while striking out nine. In league play, he pitched a complete game and struck out a season-high seven batters to lead Louisiana Tech to a 3-2 league win over Florida Atlantic and tie the series at one game apiece this past Saturday. Maton earned the win for LA Tech after pitching the fourth complete game of his career and his first of the 2014 campaign. The Chatham, Ill., native did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and held Florida Atlantic to just two hits until the ninth when the Owls ended Maton's shutout by scoring two runs on two base hits in the final frame. The junior right-hander was lights out for the Bulldogs in his best outing of the season as he allowed just one FAU runner past second base up until the ninth inning. The win over FAU marked the second win of the week for Maton as he earned the victory for Tech last Wednesday when the Bulldogs defeated Grambling State, 8-1, in Ruston. In that game, he pitched a perfect inning in relief, adding two strikeouts to help lead Tech to its 19th straight win over Grambling.
