February 24 Baseball Players of the Week
Feb. 24, 2014
UAB senior RHP Chase Mallard is the first Blazer to be named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week in consecutive weeks after striking out nine and allowing one hit in 7.1 innings pitched in a shutout win over Youngstown State. The C-USA Hitter of the Week honor went to Tulane junior 2B Garrett Deschamp, who had a double, a home run and nine RBI as the Green Wave opened league play with a series victory at Louisiana Tech over the weekend.
Mallard repeats as C-USA Pitcher of the Week after combining with sophomore right-handed pitcher Cory Eller for a one-hit shutout last Saturday against Youngstown State. He threw 7.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out nine with one walk. Mallard, who threw seven hitless innings last week against UT-Martin, extended his string of consecutive hitless innings to 16, dating back to May 22, 2013, before surrendering a hit in the top of the eighth inning. He has allowed one hit, struck out 22 and walked two in 14.1 innings in 2014.
Deschamp helped Tulane go 2-1 in its Conference USA opening weekend at Louisiana Tech, posting a .500 batting average (6-for-12). He knocked home a team-high nine RBI in the series, including a career-high six RBI on Feb. 22. The six RBI are the most by a Green Wave player this season and the most since Andrew Garner had seven on May 12 last year when he hit for the cycle. Deschamp scored four runs in the series, blasted his first career home run in Division I on Feb. 21 and notched a sacrifice fly on Feb. 22. He went 2-for-3 with two runs, one home run and two walks as the clean-up hitter on Feb. 21 and followed that up with a 4-for-5 performance with two runs, a double, a sacrifice fly and six RBI on Feb. 22. The middle infielder played flawless defense in the three-game series, totaling nine assists and 10 putouts.
