Trio Named to All-Conference USA Preseason Baseball Team
Jan. 30, 2013
NEW ORLEANS - Three seniors from the Tulane baseball squad - Garrett Cannizaro, Brandon Boudreaux and Brennan Middleton - were named to the 2013 Conference USA Preseason baseball team, as announced by the conference office.
Cannizaro was named a Preseason All-Conference USA member in 2011, while this is the first time Boudreaux and Middleton have been recognized prior to the start of the season.
"These are three seniors who have started since they walked onto our campus, and all three of them are as program-oriented as you can get," said Tulane head coach Rick Jones. "They all have a tremendous work ethic, on and off the field. I'm very proud to say that I've coached them for three years, and I look forward to coaching them for a fourth."
Tulane tied both Rice and Southern Miss for the most players from one team placed on the squad. The team was selected by C-USA coaches, and as a rule, coaches cannot vote for their own players.
"All three of these guys have been such steady performers, and that is something that is not lost on opposing coaches," added Jones. "This is a show of respect that is well deserved."
Middleton led the Green Wave with a .357 batting average last season while also driving in 19 runs. His batting average placed second overall in C-USA. The Baton Rouge, La., native started 57 games at shortstop in 2012, where he posted a fielding percentage of .959. In addition to his superb batting average, Middleton led Tulane in stolen bases (14), sacrifice bunts (11), assists (180) and fielding double plays (36). He was named to the 2012 Second Team All-Conference USA team after the season for his efforts.
Boudreaux - a 2012 First Team All-Conference USA member - was third on the team with a .330 batting average. He was also one of the players who showed some power at the plate by smacking eight homers on the season. Boudreaux was named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week three times during the 2012 campaign, which is a school record. The Mandeville, La., native, who played predominately in left field, started 53 games last season.
Cannizaro - who will see most of his time at third base this season - is coming off a year in which he batted .305 with 42 RBIs. The Mandeville, La., native was second on the 2012 Green Wave squad in assists (121) and sacrifice bunts (five). He placed third in doubles (12), runs scored (42) and RBIs and was fourth in hits (69), stolen bases (6) and total bases (95). After last season, Cannizaro was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 31st Round, but elected to return to Tulane for his senior campaign.
Tulane opens the season at the Texas State Tournament - held in San Marcos, Texas from Feb. 15-18. They will face Sam Houston State, Texas State and Missouri State before heading back to the Big Easy for their first home tilt against Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 19.
